Since the public meeting in February attended by 120 villagers who unanimously approved our continuing attempts to purchase the Red Lion, we have continued negotiations directly with the board at Fullers. The price demanded by the brewery remained unacceptably high. There had been some small movement from Fullers closer to market value but nowhere near the price we could offer.
The situation now is that Fullers has accepted an offer from a restauranteur. We believe that the price offered is greatly in excess of market valuation. We do however believe that the prospect of re-development is now overcome. For example, there has been no planning application.
We had hoped to report that our negotiations with Fullers had been successful and a deal with Fullers was on the table. However if this sale does go through (at present contracts have not been signed) we would like to work with the purchaser to avoid the possibility that the gardens and buildings are utilised in some manner unacceptable to the village.
In the event of this sale falling through we would still be in need of additional funding and pledges so that if our negotiations were successful later on then we wouldn't need to rely on bank loans for part of the purchase price and the refurbishment. Please do lend your support by completing a pledge form which is available for download on the lefthand side of the page.
